      The Importance of Essential Electrolytes

You’ve probably heard about WakeWater Electrolytes by now – our non-caffeinated electrolyte powder formulated to support healthy energy and hydration levels, sustain activity duration, and help promote muscle recovery and growth. They’ve been tested by professional athletes, expecting moms, and everyone in between, and with 4x more electrolytes than the leading sports drinks, it’s no surprise that the feedback has been overwhelmingly positive.

With electrolytes and hydration becoming increasingly relevant, and an increasing number of deceptive electrolyte brands and products, we thought we'd share some of the science behind Electrolytes, and how we crafted the perfect Electrolytes blend.

Here’s a quick breakdown of the key electrolytes necessary to keep us feeling our best:

      • Sodium: The most common and well-known electrolyte - it plays a crucial role in helping our bodies to absorb key nutrients and maintain the right balance of fluid. It’s essential that we replenish our sodium levels after sweat and exercise, as too little can directly impact our nerve and muscle function.
      • Magnesium: While sodium helps us to regulate and absorb nutrients, magnesium helps us to convert those nutrients into sustainable energy. It keeps our brain and muscles operating at full capacity and plays a key role in bone development and repair, regulating blood pressure, blood glucose, heart rhythm, and metabolism, preventing migraines and headaches, and combatting depression and anxiety.
      • Potassium: Similarly to sodium, potassium helps us to regulate our fluid balance, and similarly to magnesium, it helps us to maintain and improve our cardiovascular health. As potassium is one of the few electrolytes our body doesn’t naturally produce, it’s critical that we get enough in our daily life to keep things running smoothly.
      • Calcium: Another key electrolyte that enables our muscle, nerve, and cognitive function. Though it’s mainly associated with the formation and strengthening of bones, it also exists in our muscle cells and blood, and without it, we experience reduced muscle control and strength, normal functioning of enzymes, and our ability to think clearly and regulate emotions and behavior.
        • Chloride: Despite often being left off ingredient lists, chloride is another key electrolyte which plays a similar role to sodium, helping our cells to maintain fluid balance, regulate our natural pH balance, and strengthen muscle function.

Understanding the importance of all these electrolytes, and how they work together to keep us functioning and feeling our best was crucial when it came to developing WakeWater Electrolytes. Through research and testing, we determined that the optimal mix for maximum hydration without compromise is:

            • 800 mg of Sodium
            • 400 mg of Potassium
            • 50 mg of Calcium
            • 50 mg of Magnesium
            • 800 mg of Chloride
